AI Calorie Counter

The main objective of our project was to create an application that would help facilitate a user with his or her diet. The application would do this by asking the user questions about his or her age, height, current weight, activity level and goal weight and use this information to set a specific amount of daily consumable calories for the user depending on if he/she wants to lose weight, gain weight or maintain the same weight. The user would keep track of these calories by using the application’s food recognition software which allows a user to scan a food item that he or she is about to eat and then recognizes this food item along with the number of calories of a typical serving size of that food item. These calories would be subtracted from the user’s daily consumable calories and the user’s remaining calories would be displayed.

Hello, my name is Pallab Paul and I am applying as a candidate for the Intel Student Ambassador Program. I am currently a student at Rutgers University, New Brunswick in New Jersey. I am studying for a bachelor's degree in electrical and computer engineering with a minor in computer science. My interest in coding and computer science started off at an early age and has been growing ever since. It all started with playing around with HTML to customize layouts for an online computer game called Neopets. After playing around with other people’s codes and layouts I attempted to make my own and began learning CSS as well. While in high school, I wanted to put my knowledge to use and saw a struggling boutique store so I ended up making a website for the owner and helped him increase his sales. After joining college I continued to explore my interest in coding and began competing in various case competitions. One being the Google Community Leaders Program competition where my team and I had to create an idea using technology to decrease the number of food insecure individuals in New Brunswick. My team and I came up with an app called ProvidR where we connected the food insecure individuals with food pantries and donators so that the food insecure individuals could get the exact types of foods that they want. We worked hard and created detailed mock -ups and explanations for our idea. In the end, it turned out to be a great success and we ended up winning first place for this idea. We later went to a popular hackathon called Penn Apps where we went ahead and built the application itself using Xcode and Swift. We won a prize at this hackathon for "best social hack" which was a great experience. Currently, my team and I are working on another project and creating mock-ups for a hairstyle related app that we hope will revolutionize the men’s hairstyle industry. This project requires us to use machine learning and deep learning so I have been trying very hard to learn these topics and incorporate them into my project. Becoming a Student Ambassador would be a great opportunity because it would help me further my knowledge of Artificial Intelligence as well as help me connect with other students who are interested in the same topics as me.

The application will allow users to test out different looks with filters that are generated based on the recommendations provided. Face It also generates product recommendations that will be based on responses to questions that each user will input during the registration process about their hair, skin, and lifestyle. Face It ensures that every haircut a man gets makes him look his best. Face It also solves the product selection dilemma that a man experiences.

I was involved in various projects. Among others, these were dealing with Grid Computing, People Tracking, Object Recognition, Face Recognition, as well as with several theses in the field of Computer Vision. Subsequently, I was following my passion for "Creative Coding" and "Real-time Interaction", and founded CtrlAltLab. This is an interactive real-time application project geared to augmented reality and virtual reality. It was realized at the Science Museum of Naples, where the project was selected as the most innovative idea to "Italian Kiics Awards for Art & Science" in 2014.
