Overview / Usage

3D point-cloud (3DPC) is becoming a popular representation of the world in the emerging interaction and communication applications such as virtual reality entertainment, gaming, 3D free viewpoint sport replays broadcasting. Several typical user cases can be found in [ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11 MPEG2015/ N16331’16]. A critical problem of the 3DPC representation is the huge amount of data to signal such 3D information. Currently, many efforts have been put on developing techniques those are able to efficiently compress 3DPC representations [Rufael’17, D. Thanou’15, R. L. de Queiroz’16]. However, these is no an international compression standard for 3DPC sequences. Logically, MPEG have made a call for proposals in order to develop a coding standard for 3DPC compression technology [ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11 MPEG2014/N16732’17].
