Service Function Chaining & IPv6 Segment Routing in SDN-based Networks

Service Function Chaining (SFC) is the problem of deploying a chain of network services (such as IDS, firewall, and NAT) with respect to the traffic flow requirements. Furthermore, software-defined networking (SDN) provides a powerful infrastructure that significantly reduces the management complexity and infrastructure cost while increases the flexibility of providing the network services. On the other hand, although reducing the energy consumption is a challenging part of SFC, green strategies such as energy-aware routing, should not negatively impact the quality of services. In this project, we plan to address the SFC appliance in NFV and SDN by taking into account the resource (re)allocation architecture which enables energy-aware SFC for SDN-based networks.


Mohammad Shojafar is currently is a CNIT senior researcher at the University of Rome Tor Vergata to work on European H2020 “Superfluidity” project. Simultaneously, he is collaborating with the Sapienza University of Rome on two ongoing Italian projects funded by the Italian MIUR named PRIN and V-FOG. Recently, he is completed an Italian project named ''SAMMClouds'' project aims to address some of the Cloud open issues related to the Software as a Service (SaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) systems which is supported by the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Modena, Italy. He completed his Ph.D. in ICT at the Sapienza University of Rome in May 2016 with an “excellent” degree. He received his MSc in software engineering in Qazvin Azad University, Qazvin, Iran in 2010. Also, he received his Bsc. in Computer engineering-software major in Iran university science and technology, Tehran, Iran in 2006. He is an author/co-author of 75+ peer-reviewed publications (h-index=18, citations=950+) in well-known conferences (e.g., IEEE ICC, GLOBECOM, ISCC, SOFTCOM) and journals in IEEE, Elsevier, IOS Press and Springer publishers. He served as an editor in TIIS, as TPC in several conferences such as ICAART, ICWMC, NaBIC, IBICA, and as a reviewer for several IEEE transactions and Elsevier journals. Since 2013, he is the membership of IEEE Systems Man and Cybernetics Society Technical Committee on Soft Computing and a Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE Computer Society representing Europe. His current research focuses on distributed computing, Network Management, Wireless communications, and mathematical/AI optimization. Shojafar is the author/coauthor of more than 75 refereed articles and supervised several master students in several Italian and Iranian universities to completion. He was a programmer and analyzer in exploration directorate section at National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and Tidewater Ltd. Co. in Iran from 2008-2013, respectively.
