This subproject (postfixed -hw) relates to the hardware design component of the Minnowboard Intelligent Expansion project.

PURPOSE

Minnowboard architecture has proven its value in consumer and industrial applications. We know it's useful for promoting embedded development, networking, and the Internet of Things. Our group is embarking on teaching training courses using the current and next generation of Minnowboard devices.

To easily, quickly, and more thoroughly teach courses using the Minnowboard platform, we need to produce lures and believe that the resulting designs would add value to nonacademic efforts (like commercial) as well.

PROSPECTS

The author owns a printed circuit board (PCB) production facility in a laboratory environment, has started production on early designs, and requires outside support only to guarantee full delivery on time.

ROADMAP

The project can start in mid Febrauary and may produce prototypes in one month and finished products in three months. We expect requests to modify the design or mass (more than dozens) produce, and would have such deliverables ready in time for showcasing and distribution (to innovators, investors, or Minnowboard enthusiasts) at the Intel Developer Forum in August 2017.

GENERATIONS

Should the first set of prototypes and resulting products prove viable for the common market, this project could spawn more business worthy developments in new product generations (after the stated roadmap is exhausted.) This project has qualities of a startup, will encourage others to participate, and may develop into a business plan.

The first stage of development has begun with procurement of surface mounted device components for a basis lure design. That means, a lure is made that will provide I/O via USB for IP depleted conditions. Serial interfacing will allow connectivity to MinnowBoards in field and unconnected environments via simple USB. Furthermore, testing includes USB Type-C connectors and possible energy supply. To control data flow, five interfaces are being tested on a single lure:

FTDI FT232RL Atmel ATmega16U2 Cypress CY7665213 Microchip MCP2221A Silicon Labs CP2102N

Cypress Semiconductor supports interesting USB Type-C applications, so the USB circuitry may increase in complexity. In any case, once a winner is found, the five UART bridge interfaces listed above will be reduced to one and used in all applicable lures.
