Overview / Usage

Game Overview:

Dorfromantik is a relaxing building strategy and puzzle game in which you place tiles to create ever-growing, idyllic village landscapes. With Dorfromantik, you can immerse yourself in a quiet, peaceful world at any time and take a break from everyday life. At the same time, Dorfromantik offers a challenge for those who are looking for one: To beat the highscore, you need to carefully plan and strategically place your tiles.

In Dorfromantik you start with a stack of procedurally generated tiles. One after the other, you draw the top tile of the stack, place it on one available slot and rotate for the best fit. Thereby groups and combinations of landscapes are formed, such as forests, villages or water bodies, and you are rewarded with points depending on how well the tile fits.

Project Design Philosophy:

It is our goal to create an elegant and peaceful game for a broad playerbase and a broad amount of platforms/systems.

We're always keeping our project scope in check and are focused on the essential of a minimalistic approach to design and development.

This way we ensure that Dorfromantik is a game without complex rules. It allows players to "hop-in" without having to learn complex game rules or mechanics. The games simple and clean visual aesthetic allows for quick understanding of the game and doesn't visually overload the player.

We also want to communicate quite openly and transparently where we don't want to go with Dorfromantik, namely: 4X strategy, trading & resource management, combat and multiplayer.

Challenges of development:

Hardware limitations

Corona Pandemic, working from home

Developing a workflow as a young and small studio

Methodology / Approach

We are a small and young studio and Dorfromantik is a graphically simple but technically not necessarily trivial game.
Several thousands of objects have to be drawn every frame which results in a considerable amount of drawcalls and load on graphicscards.
Still we are working hard on having a good performance on integrated graphics upwards from the Intel HD 4000 to assure that players with lower end hardware can still enjoy the game with fluent frames per second of over 30.

We are testing the game on different platforms with two or more cores, like the Intel i3 line and up aswell as integrated intel graphics. Most of those are laptops.

Technologies Used

Intel Core 2 Dual Cores and upwards, i3 and upwards

Intel integrated Graphics from the HD4000 upwards
