Abstract

Applied Machine Learning and Industrial Internet of Things (AMLI-IoT) are rapidly emerging technologies for real-time monitoring and controlling key infrastructure within this Fourth Industrial Revolution. As a matter of fact, experts cite that the convergence of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) and intelligent systems via Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and Big Data are the electricity of today’s revolution. Energy development and transformation in East Africa right from generation, transmission, and distribution is undergoing a tough transition yet a fundamental shift for sustainability. Disruptive and effective Microgrid control and management solutions are sought most now as key enablers of Low Voltage orchestration and distribution quality index amplification through Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). Renewable energy systems have autonomously improved end-user energy efficiency however, poor coordination keeps disrupting grid operations and services consequently inclining constant fluctuations in electricity markets, reducing grid quality, reliability and resilience. Therefore, as many industrial actors around the World are increasingly transforming distribution grids making them complex and dynamic both in design and operation, deterring the effectiveness of available unscalable Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system software. We present a scalable Architecture and Control Suite based on state-of-the-art edge intelligent systems for coordinated real-time Microgrid and distribution grid energy management.
