Overview / Usage

Hex Rally Racers is a 3D arcade racing game for PC where players race on flying brooms through wild twisting and turning tracks, combining ingredients to craft potions to be used against other players. Race through six stunning tracks in a chaotic race against seven other witches, or against three friends at the same time in multiplayer split-screen!

Zooming Broom Racing

Leave the ground behind as you ride on a floating broom, zipping between trees, over rivers, and into the sky. Master the speed of your bouncy, swoopy broom to leave your opponents in the dust! Choose one of four different brooms to best suit your playstyle, and become the master of the track.

Hex Crafting

Each broom has access to a different variety of items to use during the race. While racing, seek out specific ingredients to craft unique spells to use against your foes. Learn your spells and dominate the race!

Twisting, Turning Tracks in Spellbinding Worlds

Fly through three gorgeous worlds over six wild tracks. Zoom through a moonlit forest, dodging trees and leaping over waterfalls, lakes, and rivers. Fly around a mushroom grove, bouncing off giant mushrooms and through lush valleys. Take to the stratosphere and explore a sky city, swooping around windmills, villages, and castles.

Customize Your Witch

Pick one of eight unique witch outfits and one of four custom-designed brooms to race through the world in style!

Methodology / Approach

Teamwork is a fundamental part of the educational experience at SMU Guildhall and is integral to our curriculum, as it allows students to work together in a creative atmosphere where they make design decisions and realize them in a meaningful way.

Hex Rally Racers is a game produced by the entire cohort of 60 students as part of their second Team Game Project. Students form interdisciplinary teams to produce games based on the skills taught in their specializations Art Creation, Level Design, Production, and Software Development. The team is organized with student leads and has a life cycle from concept greenlight to publication. The final outcome of the project is a tangible artifact that students can share with friends, family, and game industry professionals.

We are very proud of our students' accomplishments and hope they bring you as much enjoyment as they bring us at SMU Guildhall.

Technologies Used

We used Unreal Engine 4 and a standard set of game development tools such as Adobe CC, 3DS Max, Maya, Substance Designer, Mudbox, ZBrush, and a wide range of audio authoring and runtime tools. Intel technologies included a variety of hardware CPUs for QA, compatibility testing, and production support kindly provided by Intel's Academic Program.

We made sure the game runs well on a wide range of Intel CPUs and Integrated Graphics in addition to discrete graphics cards. Primary development was conducted on Alienware M17 R4s featuring Intel i7 CPUs and augmented by a wide range of desktop systems, most of which were based on Intel hardware.

Hybridized production environment was facilitated in part by Intel NUCs attached to Zoom room systems which allowed remote team members to be integrated into the in-person dev studio seamlessly via telepresence.
