Overview / Usage

**Blind Fate: Edo No Yami
**Set in a land brimming with Japanese folktales and robots, we present an action side scroller featuring a blind cyber-samurai who perceives his surroundings and detects enemies thanks to environmental data and sensors.

One of the main problems we had to face in developing our action game is to define the fight mechanics that make the game unique while simulating the feeling of fighting while being blind.

In our game, if you walk without knowing what is in front of you will be soon hit by something you cannot see.
You are invited to “study” what’s around you and to be also quick in doing it.
First, the enemy needs to be detectable somehow by activating the correct sensors: perhaps it is noisy, its weapon or core produces heat when activated, it’s even stinky, and so on.
Once you know more or less where the enemy is, the fight starts!

We decided that whichever interaction Yami would have with an enemy, hitting or parrying it, would make it appear instantly. Also, to reach a bigger audience we implemented a more known and diffuse combo system. Once you reach a 5 or 7 hit-combo, combining your katana, hand cannon, and air-dash attacks, a Weak Spot would be "detected" and a minigame needs to be activated.
To do so, a color-coded widget will indicate which sensor to use to actually hit the weak spot.
The player needs to change the sensor to quickly play a minigame in which the player uses the stick or the mouse to direct Yami’s slash on the weak spot, delivering extra damage.
A couple of successfully WeakSpots are usually enough to kill low-mid class enemies.

We collected several feedback from many kind of players to improve and tune-up the gameplay and we made it public releasing the Prologue of the game, 'Blind Fate: Edo No Yami - Dojo' available on Steam.

Methodology / Approach

Being a small indie studio we do not use any extraordinary methodology to solve our problem.
Each of the members of our team shares the vision of what needs to be achieved in terms of graphics, gameplay, and so on, and together we evaluate which solution to validate considering costs and benefits.
