Overview / Usage

Beat 'Em is a competitive rhythm-based action game. Players move to the beat of the music and fight to get the most points by firing at their opponents. Moving successfully will reward players with points that they can use to activate special abilities, like a shield or a scatter-shot.

There are three modes to play:

  1. Easy - HOLD the control stick to move!
  2. Pro - FLICK the control stick TO THE BEAT to move!
  3. Training - PRACTICE against bots!

as well as two hand-made synthwave songs and two arenas to choose from! Each song has a different BPM, which can change the pacing of the game.

There are also Modifiers than can be turned on/off to change the game-play, like choosing how long you want the match to be.

Once the game is over, player stats are displayed, like total kills, deaths, shots fired, and hit accuracy.

Beat 'Em was created in Unity as a final project for a sophomore Game Design course in the Quinnipiac Game Design & Development program. Development continued into a senior year Game Lab course. As we grew as students, so did our capabilities as programmers, designers, artists, and composers. Over time, we were able to solve more problems and broaden our horizons to keep advancing the game.

Methodology / Approach

Beat 'Em's development was a team effort, relying heavily on communication and playtesting. Scrum was necessary to plan weekly tasks, set expectations, and prepare for iteration deadlines.
