CTA Fall Forum

Timothy Porter, Chief Technical Officer of Underminer Studios was invited to speak at the Consumer Technology Association Fall Forum during the first week of October held in Los Angeles, California. The Consumer Technology Association is an important entity that works on behalf of creators toward policies and regulations that affect technologists, entrepreneurs, and innovators with a focus in technology.

The panel that Tim spoke on was Artificial Intelligence and Content Creation where content creation, production, and generation were key themes. The audience consisted of leaders in technology industries from across markets and disciplines. Everyone that spoke on the panel was an expert in their field ranging from augmented and virtual reality to artificial intelligence and into sound and audio among other specialties.

This very diverse set of skills made for a well-rounded discussion including ideas that go into all walks of product and project creation. About half an hour was devoted to prompted questions. The rest of the time focused on our work in relation to others in the industry and how they interplay. These events tend to be very fruitful for the whole of the industry because these leaders and influencers go back to their respective companies and share. Intercompany communication is key in this forward moving industry where terms and rules surrounding new tech are being defined. Without conversation and consensus between the industry leaders many customers and developers alike are confused by conflicting definitions and standards. Underminer’s work in Volumetric Video, markerless facial motion tracking, and wheelchair IoT with predictive drive played a major role in Tim’s talking points.

Each of these areas use massive amounts of machine learning and computer vision to create experiences beyond the current technological divide and all have large ties into the work we have done in the innovator program; utilizing many Intel technologies. The wheelchair project is in production for Stealth Products using and Intel Grove Up2 as the analytics and predictive drive system. Volumation’s entire recording backend is Intel focused with Grove Up2 boards and NUCs rounding out camera control and recording and Intel Xenon processors managing data storage and timing as well as using an entire rack of Intel Xeon servers at a data center for processing and Optane drives that speed up data transfer 10x over our previous SSD system. Intel has played a major role in the development of our products and the support from the Innovator Program has given us the means to experiment and grow in emerging tech.

This event was behind closed doors, but there are many changes coming from a regulatory and standards perspective that we will have had a hand in helping to create. We look forward to continuing to participate in the community to provide education, support, and innovative uses for technology.
