Overview / Usage

Jeff Bell from Tangent studios utilizes Blender to deliver the highest quality visualization in many projects including Netflix productions, like Next Gen. Their rendering utilizes Intel® Embree libraries for final frame render and Intel® Open Image Denoise to decrease final render time. Tangent realizes 5 – 6 times in reduction in renders embracing Intel Embree, which helps adds predictability to keep them on time and on budget. Tangent is pushing what possible with Universal Scene Description support in an open source approach, embracing open platforms and submitting back into the open source community.

Methodology / Approach

Tangent Studios did some incredible work on volumetric rendering efficiency, adding the Intel® Embree core to Blender Cycles Renderer, and generally improving the Cycles renderer for use on NextGen. Render times were extremely reasonable and manageable, even with full 3D blur and in-camera DOF used throughout the film.
