An Internet of Things (IoT) based irrigation monitoring and automation system for small scale farms and agricultural fields via a web app

Description

Agriculture is one of the major factor of human sustainability. There are several factors to consider in agriculture especially of crops in order to yield maximum production.

The major factors affecting agriculture are:

Irrigation: the supply of water to land or crops to help growth, typically by means of channels. Proper irrigation ensures proper growth of crops and the change in the water level can even ruin the entire cultivation.

Soil conditions: The type of soil plays an important role in agriculture. The soil has to be selected according to the crop type. The aspects of soil such as its PH level, moisture, temperature etc... all play a huge role in irrigation.

Climatic condition: The climate should be suitable for the crop to get high yield. Hence, the agriculture is done according to the climatic patterns


Problem Statement

  1. The small scale farmers are not able able to frequently analyse their farm condition leading to crop failures.
  2. The irrigation of the farm may become irregular an tedious with manual irrigation procedures.
  3. Farmers are not able to monitor and control their farms remotely.
  4. Yield of crops gets reduced if perfect conditions for the crops are not maintained.

Project Objectives

  1. To provide farmers with an IoT based web application for monitoring the agricultural field and its conditions.
  2. Monitor the conditions of agricultural fields with IoT based sensor network and update it through the web app.
  3. Automate the watering(irrigation) of the crops based on their requirements and soil moisture
  4. Provide Live video streaming of the farm via the web app for remote monitoring.
  5. Analyse the weather pattern and provide required suggestions to the farmer.
  6. Provide information of the various crops by incorporating the openfarm API.
  7. Provide statistics of the farm based on the sensor database.
