Description

Network Functions Virtualization ( NFV ) and Service Function Chaining ( SFC ) have moved from idea to POC to implementation stage . The challenge still remains to get bare metal performance from virtual machines . Resource Director Technology (RDT) from Intel is designed to bring in QoS to the virtual machine resources. gRPC from Google is a framework which could be used to design priority based services . This project integrates these technologies and creates a framework for more reliable and efficient services via gRPC enhanced with RDT.

I stumbled upon an article titled “Performance Comparision of Encoding Schemes for ETSI ITS C2X Communication Systems” that was written in 2014. This compared the protobuf, which is currently closely tied to gRPC, performance with commercial ASN.1 compiler performance in 2 modes: S/TOED – Space/Time Optimized modes. Results in the paper show that ASN.1 performed better in terms of runtime (lower runtime) and encoded message size (smaller). Since it’s has been about ~2 years, I’m wondering whether protobuf is optimized further and have new comparison results. Since, this was commercial tool, I couldn’t get to test on my own.

Second, do you have timeline for disassociating protobuf from gRPC? Pls share.
