Overview / Usage
Have you ever wanted to grow and understand plants but did not know how to/ did not know where to start? This was the same question Emily had when she chose to pursue gardening amidst this quarantine chaos. She ordered many different plant species only to realize that when she received them, there were no labels or instructions. This is where the problem began. She figured it would just be best to try and follow some website instructions, all of which told her that the only thing she needed to do was simply water the plants. Her plants were unable to thrive, however, and as time progressed she became more despondent about her new found interest. She decided to reach out to her friend, Ben, who had an immediate solution for Emily. He showed her the app GardenIA, the one stop information center for all gardeners. He explained that all she needed to do was take a picture of the plant and the app would respond by identifying the type of plant it is and the steps needed to ensure good growth and plant health. She was very excited and decided to install the app. Because she was a novice gardener, GardenIA was able to help her in taking care of her plants. Now, with just the snap of a picture, she is able to see all the requirements and instructions on how to grow the plant. Her journey as a gardener can finally begin…
As gardening continues to become an increasingly popular past time, many people, like Emily, feel they don’t know much about plants or how to ensure successful plant growth. Wouldn’t it be extremely convenient if at the touch of a button and the snap of a picture you could know everything you need to know to successfully grow your garden? GardenIA is here to help. By just taking a simple picture of the plant you are trying to grow it will identify the species of plant it is and how to proceed in terms of growth.
Methodology / Approach
GardenIA is an easy-to-use application targeted towards people of any age and any amount of plant knowledge, ranging from novice to expert, to allow them to understand plants/plant growth better and give them the opportunity to appreciate nature right outside their door. GardenIA uses an AI deep learning inference to rapidly identify in real time a picture of a plant taken by the user. Once it is processed, the user then receives an accurate identification of the plant and steps in how to better the growth/life cycle of that plant. With the snap of a picture and touch of a button anyone can learn about the natural environment that surrounds them everyday.
Next Steps / Recommendations
- Creating an API to have all the information about the identifiable plants to display to the user
- Extending the recommendations and information into places to buy things from supporting local businesses (e-commerce)
- Being able to show what what the plant needs in its current condition rather than providing general guidelines for growing the identified plant
- Scanning plants rather than taking pictures might be faster and easier
- Making recommendations on new plants based on the existing plants

- Uses real time data from credible sources to inform user if plant is un/healthy
- Uses OpenVINO as a ML model optimizer
