Milk is considered to be the ‘ideal food’ because of its abundant nutrients required by both infants and adults. It is one of the best sources of protein, fat, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals. Unfortunately, milk is being very easily adulterated throughout the world. Possible reasons behind it may include demand and supply gap, perishable nature of milk, low purchasing capability of customer and lack of suitable detection tests. The motivation for food fraud is economic, but the impact is a real public health concern. India is one of the largest consumer and producer of milk in the world. A recent study by India’s food safety regulator (FSSAI) found that 68.4% of milk samples examined didn’t meet its standards [1]. While most samples had been diluted with water, skimmed milk powder or sweeteners, some revealed more unpleasant surprises. In 2008, six teenagers died of food poisoning in the eastern state of Jharkhand after drinking sour milk at their boarding school [2]. Detergent, hydrogen peroxide and even urea are just some of the substances you may have ingested last time you had milk. In Spite of implementing various precautionary methods, government and private stakeholders are still struggling to uproot adulteration from the food supply chain. The supply chain of milk in India is rather too complex with increased touch points across the country. Our innovation is focused on early detection of milk adulterants and ensure the quality of milk for the consumers. We have come up with an IoT solution which unlike many of the traditional methods, consistently tracks sensitive and crucial parameters of milk and uploads the parameters into the website by performing data analytics on the observed parameters so that user can have a track of their consuming milk. Overview / Usage

We aim at getting a real-time IoT based milk quality measurement technique towards identifying the quality. Particularly it is intended to be used at the milk collection centre where the farmers will sell their milk. This product is meant for Indian scenarios where milk collection and procurement happens the way we mention.

Methodology / Approach

In order to yield best results from this proposed system, it is preferable to implement the idea in different ways according to socio-economic features. At milk procuring stations in rural areas quality checks have to be made compulsory in order to segregate the milk according to their quality. In order to accept the milk, preliminary tests are made using pH sensor for finding the acidity or alkalinity of the milk, Lactometer is used in order to know the water content in the milk, temperature sensor is used to get Corrected Lactometer reading(CLR), colour sensor for getting the colour of the milk as it is known that most of the non-white milk are unhealthy. In urban areas as milk vendors directly sell their milk to the customers one cannot have an idea about its quality. So, each milk vendor is given a unique ID and the milk brought for the sale should be tested and verified at the nearby milk station. All this data acquired from the quality assurance test on the vendor’s milk is uploaded to a website where the user can know the quality of milk which they are consuming.
